Abstract
This volume is the first of two concerning the Arab child. It is the sequence of two of the author's earlier works on Arab marriage conditions. Field work was done in an Arab village in the former Palestine between 1925 and 1931. The purpose of the book is a sociological study of the child. The author points out that the impact of westernization upon Middle Eastern culture, and the resulting culture change is of great interest to social scientists. Proper guidance and information is needed to assist this changing of Middle Eastern culture. Following the functionalist school, the author feels that in order to do this, all aspects of social life must be investigated, considering their relation to one another, and that an essential part of this is the investigation of how the individual is moulded or adjusted to social life. Pre-natal customs, birth, post-natal customs, mother-child relationships, work and play, education and character, and circumcision are discussed. Pages 213 to 288 contain notes to the text with comments and references to recent and biblical peoples.
