Abstract
This paper reviews the literature on the disintegration of Khoikhoi society in the 17th century which stressed the fragile nature of Khoikhoi economic system as the main reason. It suggested a broader ecological perspective that also accounts for the effects of other reasons including psycho-sociological stress from loss of traditional pasture lands which, together with unfavorable market terms, left the Knoiknoi prone to trauma from alcoholism and epidemic disease.
