Abstract
In this paper Reining examines the part that money played in the Zande subsistence economy of the 1950s. The author notes that money served two distinct roles in the economy: (1) as a special commodity associated with imported goods which it alone would buy, and (2) as a means of satisfying social obligations (e.g., in the payment of bride price, as gifts, etc.), and as a convenient substitute for goods and services.
