The Pygmies of the Ituri Forest
reader in general anthropology • New York, N.Y. • Published In 1948 • Pages: 322-342
By: Putnam, Patrick.
Abstract
This is a broad impressionistic survey of primarily net-hunting Mbuti. Putnam stressed a few topics and missed quite a few others: relations of Pygmies with Congolese villagers, Pygmy locomotion and hunting technique are described in adequate detail, but kinship and community structure information is sketchy and lacking in the light of Turnbull's material. There is a good account of the ritual involved in the division of game catch.
