Abstract
This work, by J. S. LaFontaine, is a brief culture summary of Bagisu ethnography. The Bagisu are a Bantu-speaking people who live on the western slopes of the extinct volcano Mount Elgon which lies across the Kenya-Uganda border approximataely fifty miles north of Lake Victoria. Major topics discussed in this study are: tribal groupings and demography, language, cultural history and traditions of origin, physical environment, economy, social and political organization, life cycle events, religious beliefs and rituals, the physical and mental characteristics of the people, their dress, arts, music, dances, and games. This document serves as an excellent introduction to Bagisu ethnography.
