Abstract
Huffman, a missionary who has lived among the Nuer for several years and speaks the language, presents here a concise account of their material culture and social life. There are chapters on the Nuer history, economy, daily routine, language, religious beliefs, and customs relating to birth, initiation, courtship, marriage and death. Representative examples of Nuer folk tales are also included. Huffman's presentation is mostly factual with almost no attempt at interpretation. Occasionally, personal value judgment enters into the account, but a sympathetic tone is maintained throughout the book.
