Economic life of the Nuer: cattle
Sudan notes and record • 21 • Published In 1938 • Pages: 31-77

Abstract
This is an ecological survey of the Nuer. As the title indicates, the importance of cattle in the Nuer economy is clearly brought out. (The secondary importance of tillage is also indicated.) One of the main factors in the Nuer migratory pattern is the need for pasturage for their cattle. The other factors in this pattern -- the need for high ground in flood time, and the need for properly drained (but moist) soil for millet -- are also adequately covered. There is a thorough description of the Nuer country, including a catalogue of insect pests, also some discussion of Nuer geographical lore. In short, the ecological background of Nuer social and political organization is outlined.
