This is an ecological survey of the Nuer detailing how their ecology influences the social and political organization of their society. The importance of cattle in the Nuer economy is clear. (The secondary importance of tillage is also indicated.) One of the main factors in the Nuer migratory pattern is the need for pasturage for their cattle. The other factors in this pattern -- the need for higher ground in flood time, and the need for properly drained (but moist) soil for millet -- are also adequately covered. There is a thorough description of Nuerland, including a catalogue of insect pests as well as some discussion of Nuer geographical lore.
