Abstract
This is a detailed report of native law and culture related to land tenure in the Yoruba provinces, prepared by the Resident of Oyo Province who was appointed by the Governor of Nigeria to Undertake the study. Both the traditional customs and modern practices are considered, as evident among the Yoruba in general and in several specific divisions. Aspects which receive attention are; traditional origins of customs, acquisition of lands by new settlements and immigrants, tenancy rights to land and crops, family relationships involved in property settlements, and the growth of individual ownership and sales of land. The author illustrates with individual cases many of the customs discussed. Data on Benin have been indexed for the Edo collection (FF21).
