Abstract
This source provides a thorough discussion of family and marriage relationships among the Afikpo Igbo. The data were gathered through participant observation, informal interview, and a formal questionnaire. Here, it should be noted, that Ottenberg had to rely on interpreters when speaking to non-English speaking Igbo. There is much descriptive information on courting and marriage customs, bride wealth, and the relationships among family members (i.e., between husbands and wives, among co-wives, and among parents and children). Major attention is given to divorce and remarriage and the factors that promote marital stability and instability among the Igbo and in Africa in general.
