Some new shrines of the Gold Coast and their significance
Africa • 13 • Published In 1940 • Pages: 138-149
By: Field, M. J. (Margaret Joyce).
Abstract
After briefly summarizing the early social organization of the Gold Coast, this article discusses the confederations of 'states,' their change and development. With this as a background, the recent preoccupation with witchcraft is analyzed on the basis of the author's premise that the cocoa industry and the prevalance of veneral disease are its primary causes. Shrines - their origin, significance, and associated practices - the localized attributes of deities, and a short description of religious festivals constitute the article's main examination.
