Abstract
This article by the former District Commissioner of the Gold Coast Colony deals with various aspects of Fanti marriage customs. Regulation of marriage, marriage arrangements and negotiations, concept and payment of dowery or bride price, and modes of marriage prevalent among various Fanti groups are analyzed. Ffoulkes also provides information on adulterous and pre-maritial sexual relationships, concubinage, methods of terminating marriage, secondary marriages, and the status of children of irregular and/or terminated unions.
