Abstract
In this doctoral thesis, based on one year's field work in 1941-42 particularly in the districts of Mampong, Wenchi, and Kumasi, Busia gives pictures of Ashanti political institutions before and after British Administration. Busia analyzes the political, administrative, and judicial institutions charastic of the Ashanti state, with particular emphasis upon the Division and the prerogatives and activities of Divisional Chiefs. Changes due to British administration are within a framework of the centralization of power and authority in contradistinction to the policy of decentralization characteristic of the pre-British Ashanti.
