Abstract
This document is based upon ethnographic data which were collected incidentally in the course of the author's linguistic research. Its principal subject is sáe, or Kpelle 'medicines'. Such medicines are owned by individuals and range in type from those which are 'secret' and involve unusual powers to those which are simply well-known home remedies for common ailments. Others may be classified as 'poisons' and fall into a category which the author describes as 'black magic'.
