Abstract
Information on Kpelle political cognition is contained in this document. The author's focus is on the extent to which modern (kwii) and traditional (noi) leaders and officeholders are viewed as legitimate by the Kpelle. Information on compliance, selecting a forum for dispute settlement, the decision-making process in dispute settlement, and the Kpelle theory of leadership are presented. The author concludes that '…Kukaataa Kpelle have accepted the modern political system only to the extent that it could be legitimated by the old, traditional values'.
