This is an “African Ethnological Monograph” published under the auspices of the International African Institute in 1957. This monograph compilation is mainly based on the findings of the Dakar-Djibouti Expedition to study the Dogon culture in depth (1931-33). It also involves a wide literature search. This is a general survey with chapters on the environment, nomenclature, physical anthropology, demography, history, language, economy social life, religious and intellectual life, and external influences, and supplies a clear description of the state studies on Dogon culture as a guidance for future research.
