Abstract
This is a detailed study of the history of the Basques and of the western Pyrenees in general from their earliest beginnings to approximately the 16th century. The main focus of this work, however, is on the period between the Roman conquest when the Basques first emerge in the historical record as a distinct people, to the late 12th century by which time the basic political divisions and many of the salient features of their society had been established (p. xi). In addition to lengthy descriptions of their troubled and often violent history, Collins also notes the various ways in which the Basques have successfully resisted assimilation by a succession of formidable neighbors and conquerors during the period under study.
