The western Isles today

By: Ennew, Judith.
Abstract
This document is concerned with cultural and social change among Hebridean Scots of the Isle of Lewis and Harris. Ennew argues that despite much that appears remote and quaint in the 'crofting way of life,' what are conventionally taken for Highland 'traditions' are in fact relatively recent in origin and intimately tied to the development of capitalism in the United Kingdom and to English domination in a multi-ethnic state.
