Abstract
The purpose of this source is 'to give a picture of the conditions of life and work of the poorer classes in London in the eighteenth century' (p. vi). On a research scholarship from the London School of Economics and Political Science, the author investigated records such as parish archives, depositions of witnesses, petitions to Quarter Sessions, reports of coroners inquest, settlement cases, the publications of charities, the pamphlets of reformers, and Parliamentary reports to obtain data for this source. Topics covered include the hazards of life, death statistics, the growth of London, the housing situation among the poor, immigration and emigration, the predominant trades practiced in London, the situation of children who were dependent on the parishes for their support, and the apprenticeship system through which the children were disposed of.

- Categories 874 and 466 were used for the latter system where the children were apprenticed for a good fee and were expected to set up for themselves at the end of the apprenticeship. This was actually a form of cheap child labor. Category 467 was used for the apprentice for labor who would be a journeyman at the completion of his apprenticeship. Extensive notes to the text are located on pp. 323-404. These notes have been marked for Category 113. The substantive text categories have been used only when data other than bibliographic data occur.
