human sexual behavior; variations in the ethnographic spectrum • New York • Published In 1971 • Pages: 3-37
By: Messenger, John C. (John Cowan).
Abstract
This is a detailed psycho-social analysis of the manifestations, historical causes, inculcation, and historical and cultural implications of sexual repression in an isolated Aran Island community. A brief culture historical summary is presented as an introduction. The author sees strong functional relationships between the Celtic religious tradition combined with nineteenth century "puritanical" Catholicism, family relationships and expression of emotion, sexual repression, and rate of emigration. A selection of quotations from other authors on religious influences on personality development is included.
