Abstract
During the commonwealth period in Iceland (ca. ninth century -1262/64), the people were tied together in a number of different ways, through family, marriage, oaths, community, parish, and probably most important of all, friendships. This article discusses the relationships, including friendships, that developed between chieftains (GOðar) and their followers (þINGMENN), as well as between chieftains themselves.
