Abstract
This study presents a discussion of environmental perceptions among small-scale fishers and whalers in Iceland and what shapes their thinking about the marine resources they utilize for their living. The author describes the everyday encounters fishers have with animals and how they explain to themselves and others what they think is their self-evident traditional rights to use what they see as resources, arguing that the self-evidence is shaped by subsistence realities. The article also discusses how the actions of Western environmentalists have evoked and informed a discussion of ethical assumptions about the rights of animals and people in conflicts over conservation, a discussion which has strengthened fishers' claims to resource use in accordance with their world view (p. 47).
