By: Rich, George W..

Abstract
This overview of Icelandic kinship addresses two broad questions and several issues that have been generated in the literature. The questions which Rich attempts to answer in this document are: (1) how should the kinship system be described and classified, and (2) how the system works, or has worked in the past, in connection with other aspects of Icelandic culture. The major portion of this paper tries to answer these questions, and several related issues relevant to kinship, and to suggest directions that future research in this field might take.
