This article is based on field work in 1951-52 by the authors respectively in Könkämä (north Karesuando) as a pre-doctoral fellow of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research and in Lainiovuoma (south Karesuando) as a Tennant Student of the University of Cambridge. The article discusses the use of colloquial personal names by the reindeer nomadic Saami of Karesuando parish, Sweden. Various Saami names are present in the text along with explanations as to their derivation.
