Abstract
This source is a continuation of Plinys encyclopedia of the knowledge of his time, and covers metals, minerals, and a history of art. Book 33 is concerned with gold and silver, their mining, production, and uses, including economic, medicinal, and artistic. Book 34 concerns the base metals—copper, bronze, lead, tin, iron, zinc, and others and again their various uses, especially in art and medicine. There is a long history of bronze statuary and important artists. Book 35 is a history of art, and covers painting, artists, colors and pigments. It also includes information on dyes, brick-making, sulphur, bitumen, and various earths, and their uses. Plinys historical coverage is almost exclusively Greek and Roman.
