Abstract
This source is a continuation of 6: Columella. It contains Books V-IX of the Res Rustica. Book V covers land measurement, the number of plants to set on a piece of land, further information on vineyards, and information on other trees, especially olive trees. Book VI covers the care and training of oxen, cattle, horses, and mules. Book VII covers care of asses, goats (including a section on cheese-making), pigs and dogs. Book VIII covers farmyard poultry, pigeons, thrushes, peacocks, amphibious birds, ducks, and fish (in fish ponds). Book IX covers wild animals (those kept on the farmers land for sport and feasts), and bee-keeping, including their management, diseases, and pests, and the collection and processing of honey and wax. All of the books on animals include information on diseases and treatment and indicate a broad knowledge of pharmacology and veterinary medicine.
