Abstract
Although this document deals generally with the Imperial Roman period dating from the age of Augustus to that of Constantine (27 B.C.-311 A.D.), the primary focus of this document centers on the century and a half of Roman history dating "…from the accession of Tiberius to the renewal of barbarian incursions during the reign of Marcus Aurelius" (p. 80)―the era referred to by historians as the period of the Pax Romana (Roman peace), 14-192 A.D. Much of the source is composed of excerpts from the literature of the period, as represented for example, by the writings of Pliny (the younger), Suetonius, Tacitus, and Seneca, and from epigraphical and papyrological sources. At least two hundred of these selections appear for the first time in English translation. The subject matter of the source deals generally with imperial policy and administration, economic life, society and culture, life in the municipalities and provinces, the Roman army, law, and religion with special emphasis on the rise and eventual triumph of Christianity.
