Greek women: sacred or profane
Journal of modern Greek studies • 1 (1) • Published In 1983 • Pages: 185-202
By: Dubisch, Jill.
Abstract
This is a paper on women's role in religion. Dubisch argues that the sacred sphere should be regarded as a public realm and women's participation in religion outside of the home, a public activity. Also, with respect to healing, women are mediators between the family and the supernatural. Although both men and women are subject to pollution, women are more identified with pollution, because they are the controllers of pollution and guardian of order in the home.
