Regionalism and local community
regional variation in modern greece and cyprus: toward a perspective on the ethnography of greece • 268 • Published In 1976 • Pages:

Abstract
In this article, Campbell discusses the segmentary nature of Greek society in which honor, interest, and status are based on the family, village, and state. Regional affiliations outside of the district are weak. Campbell offers geographical and historical reasons for this lack of regional identity, including the mountainous and insular territory of Greece, the absence of a dominant landowning class, and the control of bureaucracy by Ottoman rulers.
