The idiom of family

Abstract
Kenna attempts to show in this paper how '…the idiom of family, used in relationships of wedding sponsorship and godparent -hood (KOUMBARIA), reconciles the ideal of family independence and self-sufficiency with the need of co-operative ties outside the family' (p. 347). Although the major portion of this study deals with the role and function of the KOUMBARIA in the society, there is some interesting data here on the use of kinship terminology between unrelated individuals. These kinship terms are used in situations where there is no thought of a reciprocal relationship, but rather as an indication that respect is recognized or required.
