Abstract
This paper serves as an introduction to a wide range of essays appearing in the Greece file which are related to topics of gender in rural Greece, from women's role and position in the domestic sphere and the connection of this sphere to the larger world, to women's role and image in the religious system and their attempts as actors to create emotionally satisfying relationships and activites, to the symbolism of gender itself. (See documents no. 20, 23, 25, 26, 30, 34, 56, 78, 82, and 85). This introductory article by Dubisch provides the reader with a general background and theoretical orientation to this field of studies
