Abstract
This essay discusses the effects of environmental conditions on household boundaries and activities. It describes the various ways in which social and economic conditions have produced selective changes in households, particularly in relations of authority and in patterns of conflict and sharing (p. 149). The article also examines the ways in which households have not been affected by change in the social environment, especially in regard to the division of labor in domestic work.
