Abstract
This book describes features of Toda society and culture with particular emphasis on formal rules of social organization, relations with the state and neighboring ethnic groups, religious and economic activities of the dairyman, and major rites and ceremonials. In doing so, the book seeks to correct earlier ethnographies which wrongly viewed the Toda as 'isolated' and 'non-Hindu tribal people'. It argues that the Toda have always interacted as part of a wider Nilgiri society which should be viewed as a variety of the much larger Hindu society of South India.
