Cousin marriage in context: constructing social relations in Afghanistan

Abstract
This is a study of parallel cousin marriage and other marriage arrangements among the Ghilzai Pashtun of southeastern Afghanistan. The author examines the framework of marriage, the strategy of marriage alliances, the arrangement of marriage and the marriage ceremony, and the structural contexts of marriage in Ghilzai society. He finds that close cousin marriages tend to be accompanied by marriages farther afield in order to counter the isolating effects of close cousin marriage. He argues that the specific character of any single marriage is determined by the history of adjacent marriages.
