Abstract
The subject of this monograph is state formation in Swat during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In his analysis the author pays particular attention to the khans (local-level political leaders and landlords) and the political actions and leadership of the mullahs. The author approaches this subject by way of a critique of Fredrik Barth's (1959) analysis of decentralized political relations in Swat and a consideration of the colonial context of Swat state formation as part of a wider Muslim phenomenon. With regard to ethnographic information, the interweaving of theory, critique and historical description and analysis make this a difficult source to work with. This source also includes a useful chronology of Swat history.
