Abstract
This is a brief account of the history of Christianity in the Garo Hills and the impact of Christianity on the clan system, economic life, and elite composition. At the time of writing about 50 percent of the Garos were Christian. The author suggests that a major impetus for conversion was due to the British pacification of the region and the Garo need for British protection from the plains Hindus and Muslims.
