AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a history of the educational system in the Garo Hills. It begins with a description of the traditional system of teaching based in the bachelor houses (NOKPANTE), and continues with the history of the various schools established by the Baptist and Catholic Missions, and government from 1826 to 1981. Some early Garo graduates of the mission schools founded their own schools and played an important role in expanding the educational system.
