Abstract
This is a short history of Garo secular literature and literary journals, and their relationship. The first Garo literary journal was published beginning in 1879 by the American Baptist Mission and was largely theological in character. The first truly secular journal began publication in 1938 and allowed the Garo 'to express their thoughts and ideas freely.' The author describes the important role secular literature and literary journals played in fomenting a modern Garo identity.
