This document discusses ethnic relations between the Karen and neighboring groups in Burma and Thailand. The focus is on some of the cognitive and structural aspects that shaped ethnic relations in the region. The first led to differences reflected aspect of ethnic behavior, language, dress, rituals and cultural mythology. The second accounted for hierarchy in ethnic relations manifested in marriage rules, land tenure patterns, and historical inequality in political control and domination.
