Abstract
This monograph describes religious practices in rural Thailand with an emphasis on the discrepancy between “pure” Buddhism and the practice of magic. Terwiel describes children and religion; adolescents, amulets, and tattooing; the monkhood experience; leaving the order, courting and marriage; building a house; the precepts and ritual; the pursuit of beneficial KARMA; and old age, death, and the procedures which seem to be effective (p. 278).
