Abstract
This monograph, which is the first of two half-volumes on the ethnography of the Negritos of Asia, deals with the economy and sociology of the Andamanese Negritos, Semang, Sakai (Senoi )and Aeta groups. Only the material on the Semang and the Sakai or Senoi has been translated, and of that only the data relevant to the Semang has been indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials)subjects. Material on economy includes: housing, clothing and adornment, the food quest and food preparation, trade, medicine and leisure time activities. In discussing sociology Schebesta presents his complete material for the first time. This covers social organization, property rights, marriage and child rearing. A chapter describing his informants presents interesting life history materials. The material presented in this source is the result of two years field work during the periods 1924-1925 and 1938-1939. Information is given about the following Semang groups: Jahay, Kenta'-Bog'n, Kensiu, Lanoh, Menri', Batek, Sabub'n, Mos, Jedek, Karei, Tonga and Hami. An index of native terms appears at the end of the second half-volume (Schebesta, 1957, no. 2).
