Abstract
This monograph is a detailed study of traditional Vietamese history and culture from the legendary period preceding 257 B.C. to the beginning of the twentieth century before many contacts with the West took place. Much of the early historical data were taken from Chinese annals contemporary with the specified period. Major ethnographic topics deal with geography, physical and mental characteristics of the Vietnamese, the calendar and festivals, social life, law and justice, warfare, craft specialization, clothing, foods and drinks, dwellings, modes of transportation, leisure-time activities, music, and literature. The work contains many illustrations which were taken from the studies of Georges Dumoutier, Ed. Nordemann, and from a Vietnamese language course of Tissot.
