AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a general survey of the social and cultural organization and customs of the community in Tonkin. It is especially concerned with the class and status systems and their relationship to taxation, the allotment of lands, the registration of the citizenry, and the ceremonial obligations and rights in the community. There are interesting data on the ceremonial round, on births deaths, marriages and education. The general emphasis is on the commune as a social corporation having considerable autonomy vis a vis the state and coming as a corporation between the state and its citizenry.
