AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is one of a series of articles on Annamese customs which were published between 1880 and 1883. Landes was one-time mayor of Cholon and the data for these articles evidently are the result of some years of experience and observation as a resident of Cochinchina. Landes seems to have been careful and objective and on the whole the data given here correspond with information found in other sources. The present article is on customs connected with death and funerals. Much detail is given on the preparation of the corpse and coffin for burial, behavior and dress during mourning and the funeral procession.
