The music of Hué, Don-Nguyet and Don-Tranh
Amis du Vieux Hué, Bulletin • 6 • Published In 1919 • Pages: 233-387
By: Hoàng-Yèn, Botsford, Keith.
Abstract
Research on the old music, for the sake of their preservation and use, forms the basis of this article on music in Hué. Hoàng-Yèn was secretary-interpreter to the Residency. Included are the 'laws' concerning music, i.e., when it is not played, the eight 'perfections', descriptions and illustrations of both stringed and wind instruments, famous musicians, and musical techniques. The latter includes notations, symbols, and musical structure as well as the techniques of playing, tuning and the size of the strings. A short description of the kinds of music is followed by full musical notations of many airs for both the 'moon' guitar (don-nguyet) and the sixteen-stringed guitar (don-tranh). The factual parts of this article are good. Where footnotes have consisted only of the ideogram equivalents of the QUOC NGU or the English word, they have been omitted from the translation.
