Abstract
Pierre Gourou was a professor of geography in the Faculté des Lettres at the University of Bordeaux. This is a study of the distribution of house types in northern and central Annam. Gourou identifies nine house types, all related to each other, but differing in architectural, structural and decorative details as one moves progressively southward. In addition, Gourou identifies two distinct roof types. Gourou looked especially for geographical factors to explain variations in house types, but he found none that seemed significant. There is excellent geographical material on the regions studied and several good maps showing the distribution of villages. There are many valuable sketches illustrating types of framework and structural principles, and many fine photographs of the types of houses discussed. In addition, the author discusses materials used, carpenters, their degree of specialization, some of their beliefs about house building, etc. On the whole, this is a valuable, though fairly technical study.
