Abstract
This is a detailed study of the major institutions of Vietnamese life as encountered by the French in the 19th century. Luro was associated with an early survey of Indochina by the French and was subsequently Inspector of Native Affairs in the French possession of Cochinchina. The introduction is a useful study of the social and political events in Vietnam leading to the French seizure of Cochinchina. An historical and geographical chapter is followed by topical chapters on Vietnamese national institutions. Some of the best of these are those on the educational system and its relationship through government examinations to the recruitment of the administrative classes and the class system of the country, the structure of the legal and court system, the organisation of the family with respect to the ancestor cult, the socio-political organisation of the village in relation to the administration and territorial hierarchy of the nation. Interesting comparisons with ideal patterns copied from Chinese national institutions are made. The system of designating the major divisions of Indochina used here are no longer employed and are somewhat unclear.
