Abstract
This doctoral dissertation written at the University of Lyon is an analysis of the effects of French colonization on the social classes of Vietnam with emphasis on the emergence of a proletariat as a result of industrilization. Dumarest summarizes the composition of society and the economic organization before the arrival of the French, but the bulk of the book is concerned with economic developments during French control and the accompanying effects on the social structure. The author includes a detailed exposition of labor legislation under French administration and an analysis of consumer income and expenditures by social groups. As far as possible, his figures were checked and errors have been indicated; all quantitative data, however, should be used with caution.
