Clarendon Press • Oxford, England • Published In 1928 • Pages:
By: Bell, Charles Alfred.
Abstract
The author was the British political representative in Tibet, Bhutan and Sikkim from 1904-1921. Bell knew the Tibetans well. This document contains information on the mode of life of peasants and shepherds, the robber class, the beggars, and the nobility. Daily activities, material culture, position of women, economic activities, recreations, marriage customs, children and their mode of life and education, food burial customs, and many other aspects of the Tibetan culture are fully discussed. Particularly notable are the two chapters dealing with the ceremonial and etiquette so important in Tibetan life. Mr. Bell's book is distinctive not only for its complete-as-possible account of the Tibetans but also for its very sympathetic and understanding treatment of a people whom he knew so intimately. Parts of the book have been indexed for the Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim collections.
