Abstract
This essay deals with '…some of the basic concepts that play a part in Chinese villagers' understanding of bodily health or sickness' (p. 91). Based on data collected in the village of Ch'i-nan, Ahern presents ideas about hot and cold, yin and yang in the body and in society; the importance to patients of knowing the cause of an illness; and the process of finding a cure.
