By: Gallin, Bernard.

Abstract
This essay contains a description of the adaptation and modification of conventional cultural institutions by migrants from Hsin Hsing village to Taipei. Gallin compares urban and rural differences in economic and prestige competition, residence patterns, the location of childbirth, income and standard of living, ancestor worship, and the choice of medical practitioners. Gallin concludes that in the urban setting, people adapt and modify their rural institutions rather than rejecting or replacing them.
